How do you deal with "hidden factories" ?
One thing that is happening to me lately, is that when I set out to do a task, there are often times many other things I did not take into account. Sometimes I may not have even planned the task/event at all, but it was very important to do in that moment. Now obviously, one cannot predict with total certainty everything that would need to be done in a day, but I am watching and observing the impact this has on my time and energy.
How to deal with these "hidden factories" that pop up during the day ?

Hey there ... since we're closing the Ask Mark project I'm going to answer all of these questions via text before shutting it down.
As for your question ...
This is is a super important management concept far too few people are aware of.
Here's how I handle it:
1. Know your overall strategy and purpose
2. Start communicating that top down in your organization
3. Use "Scrum" to have team leaders meet with teams daily to find out what's up (keep it short)
4. Instruct your leaders to be on the lookout for day to day activities (identified in scrum and by Management by Walking Around) that are not in alignment with your strategy.
5. Eliminate those things - or make them visible - one by one.
It's going to be a constant gradual process.
